It was discovered by Luciano Tesi and Andrea Boattini at the Pistoia Mountains Astronomical Observatory in San Marcello Pistoiese, Italy, on January 1, 2000. It is named after Alvaro Rinaldi, an Italian topographer and amateur astronomer.
